Spring is in the air, as the saying goes. Spring is often associated with the element of air and the direction of east. Like the new sun rising in the east, spring represents a new beginning, a rebirth. The air smells fresh. The wind is blowing the rain clouds across the sky. The days are longer. The first signs of spring are the green buds popping out of the ground and on the tips of tree branches. The bird songs are returning and eggs are being hatched. Newborns are finding their legs as the last bits of snow melt from the northern mountainsides. What signs of spring are you seeing, feeling, hearing, tasting and smelling?
On Thursday, March 20th at 3:01am MT the sun will cross the celestial equinox from south to north, creating equal day and night hours across the globe. In the Northern Hemisphere, we transition into spring. The word equinox come from the Latin words aequus, meaning equal, and nox, meaning night. The balance of day and night is an opportunity for us to bring more balance into our days. What can you let go of? What can you receive more of?
As the seasons turn, we take a moment to honor the transition and recognize the seasons without and the seasons within. What feelings does spring conjure for you? Excitement? Hesitation? Anxiousness? Ease? A moment of reflection on the changing season helps us to connect to the natural world and our part in it.
Here are a few things you can do to honor and celebrate the Spring Equinox:
1. Sit outside or in a quiet place and write on this journal prompt (or any of the questions above): What is being birthed in my world? What changes are occuring in my mind, body and spirit?
2. Read this blog post about ways to celebrate spring equinox.
3. Watch this video for a Spring Equinox ritual and meditation (47 minutes).
4. Enjoy this inspiring Spring Playlist.
5. Listen to this Full Bloom Flowering Yoga Nidra, which is done in savasana, lying down on your back (57 minutes).
