Rituals for Seasonal Transitions
Sep 17, 2023I hate change. It may be my Taurean moon, but changes feel annoying to me, like totally inconvenient, like why can’t things continue as expected and not throw me off my game kind of annoying.
One major change that we all undergo together is seasonal change.
We can see in the natural world around us the effects of the changing climate in the way plants and animals react to seasonal changes. This is instinctual to nature beings, inevitable and irresistible. Unlike me, they don’t get annoyed or feel inconvenienced.
We may change our clothes when we go outside, but we mostly keep to the same or similar schedule, move at the same pace, and maintain indoor temperature controls so we don’t have to adapt too much when inside. Modern living requires us to sustain the status quo regardless of the time of the year.
However, if we honor the seasonal changes, allowing ourselves to adapt, we are able to be in rhythm with nature and the way in which humans have evolved for hundreds of thousands of years in relationship to the outdoors and the natural world.
In doing so, we can honor the natural rhythms of our bodies and our intuitive nature.
“To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance…” -Ecclesiastes 3:1-22 NKJV
Living seasonally has been healing for me in many ways. I have learned to honor my own pace instead of one programmed by society. I have avoided burnout as well as lethargy. I have learned self-acceptance and trust in my own divine timing. I have learned how to be in a blessed relationship with nature.
Just because it is equinox and one day is equal in light and dark does not mean that suddenly it feels like fall or spring. These times of transition when seasons are changing can sometimes be a struggle because if you are sensitive, you feel the in-between, the liminal state of shifting.
During this time, I feel as if I have one foot in summer and one foot in fall. It’s almost like a sense of floating. Where do I land?
To help me with these transition times, I love to honor the seasonal shifts with ritual. This is a rite of passage for a seasonal transition, the rites of autumn (or spring). It helps to mark the time. Perhaps celebrate the new phase and grieve the end of the old. It helps to acknowledge how far I’ve come and bring hope and intention to where I’m going.
If you are in the northern hemisphere and interested in joining me, I am offering a FREE online Autumn Equinox Ritual on the eve of the 21st. This one will be recorded.
If you haven’t done a ritual with me before, I like to keep them simple and sensical—minimal tools, a trance (guided imagery) with journaling and optional shares. You can do rituals alone but being in community with each other and the nature beings enhances our interconnectedness, belonging and love.
